Promising innovations for the future
At EPOSA, we invest in the future. To this end, we drive innovative technologies and develop customer-oriented solutions. In doing so, we work closely with our technology partners as well as Research and Teaching together. Here you will find an overview of ongoing projects and developments:
Smartphone app with precise positioning
Positioning using smartphones is currently only possible with meter-level accuracy. EPOSA is developing a new app to address this challenge in a research project. This app will allow measurement data to be determined with the same precision as RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) methods. Potential applications include competitive sports and making everyday life easier for visually impaired people.
IONEX for short-term weather forecasts
IONEX ionospheric models enable real-time determination of local weather conditions – for example, for short-term weather forecasts. This allows for the implementation of storm warnings, the determination of train delays, and the support of navigation systems in vehicles. This application could play a major role in the future development of autonomous driving.
Global Ionospheric Maps' in IONEX format
The ionosphere is the layer of Earth's atmosphere at altitudes between 50 km and 1000 km where free ions are primarily formed by solar radiation. The number of ions therefore depends not only on the time of day but also, in the long term, on solar activity (11-year solar cycle, next maximum in 2025). Ionospheric delay represents the greatest source of error in GNSS distance measurements. Modeling ionospheric activity is thus essential for the quality of GNSS point determination. Single-point single-frequency measurements, in particular, must be corrected using ionospheric models to prevent positioning errors on the order of a few meters. Good ionospheric models are also indispensable for ambiguity resolution in RTK positioning and specific PPP algorithms. The models provide the vertical electron content in a standard raster format (IONEX). EPOSA provides IONEX files both as forecast models for the coming day for real-time applications and as highly accurate models of the previous day for post-processing analysis. The IONEX standard format can be read by any common GNSS software, but can also be used for in-house GNSS application software development.
Handy GNSS receiver for on the go
The small and portable PPM-10xx receiver enables centimeter-accurate positioning. It can receive signals from all four global navigation satellite systems and display them on a tablet or smartphone. EPOSA supports the manufacturer with accuracy tests and product trials, and customers with technical support.
